Admissions Information

To gain admission to the sociology major, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. The middle 50% GPA range for this major is 2.55 - 3.33. The middle 50% GPA represents the average GPA of admitted students for the last three semesters into the major.
  2. You must have enough time left at Illinois State in order to follow the sequencing requirements for our major core classes.

We are recommending that you have at leat three semesters of work left to do at ISU so that we will have time to move you through our required sequenced classes (206, 270, 271, 275, and 300). Under some circumstances, summer will count as a semester and may help reduce the required amount of time needed to complete the core classes. However, be advised not all core classes are offered in the summer.

The Admissions Committee reviews provisional applications monthly. If you are accepted provisionally into the major, you will receive a letter or email from the advisor with directions as to what to do next. We have a mandatory major orientation meeting monthly meeting for new majors. The time and place of the meeting will be explained in your acceptance letter or email. You will also be notified by letter or email if you are not accepted into the major. During times of over subscription, we are sometimes not able to admit all students who apply. Applications are reviewed on a first come first serve basis.

You will be required to maintain and submit a portfolio of your major coursework upon completion of Sociology 300, Senior Experience, in Sociology. The portfolio will consist of a collection of papers and assignments you have completed over the course of the major. You will begin your portfolio during Sociology 206, Sociological Inquiry.

In addition, you will be required to complete a writing assessment. We will offer the writing assessment several times a month. Upon submitting your application, you need to sign up for a writing assessment. The sign-up sheets will be located in the department office, Schroeder 332. The topic of your writing assessment is: Identify a social issue or problem that concerns you, and discuss some of the social factors that you believe contribute to it.

Upon successful completion (grade of C or better) of Sociology 206 , you will be formally admitted to the major. If at anytime your major GPA drops below a 2.0 you will be removed from the major. You must earn a C or better in all required courses.

Please make sure to keep your local address updated through iCampus to ensure that you receive any mailings from the department.
