The Department of Sociology & Anthropology is an exciting and progressive department that prides itself on individualized attention to its students and a faculty that is actively engaged with scholarship, teaching and service from the local to global scales.

Our department is among the most diverse in the University in terms of faculty interests and expertise. As a joint department, we use the alliance between sociology and anthropology colleagues to build disciplinary bridges that positively impact our students, the faculty, and our programs.   • Tom Gerschick, associate professor in the department of sociology and anthropology, has been named the Registered Student Organization Advisor of the Year for his work with ISU Habitat for Humanity. Click here to read the full story.
  • Senior Sociology major, Tracy Deyell has been accepted into the University of Colorado at Boulder's Ph.D. program in Sociology where she will specialize in criminology.  She received a six-year funding offer. This summer she will intern with the Youth Services Bureau in Ottawa, Ontario in order to finish her second major, Criminal Justice. Deyell has been a member of the Dean's List all four years and has maintained a 4.00 grade-point-average for six semesters.  She accomplished this while being a Varsity swimmer.  Deyell, was awarded the Most Valuable Swimmer honor for the 2007-08 season. She holds the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard Individual Medley school records. She recently broke the Missouri Valley Conference record in the 400-yard Individual Medley.
  • Graduating Sociology student, Sarah Torbeck, has been honored with a $1200 scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh's Russian and East European Summer Language Institute to study intermediate level Russian. Her documentary film, "Vstrecha: A Meeting," a film about the Cold War experiences of her parents and her Russian partner's parents, was named the Best In-Course Honors Project of 2007.
  • Michael J. Schaefer, who graduated last year with his BS in anthropology, has received a Fulbright Full Grant to conduct archaeological research in Brazil from March through December of 2009.To read the full story in CAS News, please click here.
